IASCA had a positive meeting with the Minister for Arts, Jimmy Deenihan T.D. and members of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, where we introduced the possibility of creating a uniform definition of Irish music in Irish broadcasting contracts, where multiple definitions currently exist. Our next meeting will be to introduce this initiative to the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI) and RTÉ.
 

The IASCA project has been set up to increase radio play in Ireland for Irish artists and we’ve done just that on Galway Bay FM!

There is now a daytime slot at 3.35 every day on the Jon Richards show that broadcasts music from Irish artists. The slot contains an ‘IArtist of the Week’, music news, gig of the week in Galway and album of the week, along with one a one off play for yet another Irish artist.

We’re chuffed to bits with the progress of PLAY IRISH which wouldn’t happen without the support of Galway Bay FM and the local music industry, who all play the music from the Artist of the Week on their premises.

IASCA and FMC in partnership with Culture Ireland are giving the gift of music from Ireland to dignitaries and the international press corps travelling with HRH The Queen and President Obama during their individual visits to Ireland this month.

The double CD entitled, Music From Ireland 2011 will be presented to over 1000 visitors and key national and international media who will be in Ireland for the visit of the UK and US heads of state. The main aim of the project is to promote Irish artists both at home (pr & streaming) and abroad (CD) and hope the artists involved benefit by being heard by the recipients, which include international press.

The artist selection process involved representative organisations Music Network, The Contemporary Music Centre, Improvised Music Company and First Music Contact, as well as Culture Ireland and The Arts Council, nominating artists they feel currently represent a snapshot of each genre.

The music is divided in to four chapters, each chapter representing two genres:

Indie & Rock - Lisa Hannigan, Ham Sandwich, We Cut Corners

Folk & Traditional - Mick Flannery, Ryan Sheridan, Fidil,

Classical & Contemporary - Irish Chamber Orchestra, Crash Ensemble

Jazz & World - Metier, Justin Carroll, Niwel Tsumbu

Allow me to introduce IASCA - Irish Association of Songwriters, Composers & Authors (pronounced ee-asca)

Music writers are experiencing major difficulties in the ever-changing music industry, and often feel isolated.
We are launching IASCA, which aims to foster a community of songwriters, composers and authors in Ireland, and with your support, lobby and campaign for change for us all.

OPEN FOR MEMBERSHIP!

We have been working hard behind the scenes to set up and begin making progress (see ongoing projects below). The Board of IASCA have met quite a few times, and the association is managed by Sinéad Troy, who has many years experience working with artists in management, record labels, merchandising, touring and recording roles. We are now open for membership and hope you will join us to converse, discuss issues, attend or present mentoring sessions, and create opportunities for music writers.

* PLAY IRISH – a project created to increase radio play in Ireland for Irish artists. The project launched in Galway last month, and has already introduced new artists to a daytime radio audience - the aim is to eventually go national with PLAY IRISH.

IASCA is also working with First Music Contact, Music Managers Forum Ireland, and IMRO to discuss issues and create opportunities for our members in Ireland.
* MENTORING
Professionals will be available online and in person at scheduled intervals for mentoring in areas like songwriting / touring / recording / collaborations and lots more.
